Chengdu, also known as “Rongcheng” and “Jincheng”, is the provincial capital of Sichuan. It is an important economic and cultural center in western region of China. With the total area of 14,335 sq km, Chengdu currently houses 16.581 million permanent residents. Chengdu is one of the national historical and cultural cities of China. It is the birthplace of the ancient Shu civilization, and home to the significant archeological discovery. Former regimes used to establish their capitals there such as Shu-Han, Cheng-Han, Former Shu, and Later Shu.

 

Tourist Attractions in Chengdu:

 

Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Located on the northwest edge of Chengdu Plain, Dujiangyan Irrigation System is declared a State Priority Protected Site, National Scenic Areas and National 5-A Tourist Attraction of China. It is a global hydraulic engineering heritage and was listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2000.

Jinsha Site Museum

Jinsha Site was once the capital of ancient Shu kingdom from 12th century BC to 7th century BC (about 3200 to 2900 years ago). Jinsha Site Museum is built on the original location of Jinsha Site Ruins to protect, study and display Jinsha culture and the ancient Shu civilization.

Chengdu Panda Base

Chengdu Panda Base is a National 4-A Tourist Attraction of China and world-famous research base of giant panda breeding and other endangered wild animals. It also serves as a research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students nationwide.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage

Du Fu Thatched Cottage is the former residence of the great Chinese poet, Du Fu. In AD 759 of Tang Dynasty, Du Fu took refuge with his family in Chengdu from An-Shi Rebellion and built a thatched cottage. He has lived there for 4 years and composed more than 240 poems in his cottage.

Wuhou Temple

Wuhou Temple, or Wuhou Shrine, is located in Wuhou Temple Street. It is the only ancestral shrine dedicated to the memory of both the Emperor Liu Bei and his civil official Zhuge Liang. The site consists of Wuhou Temple, Han Zhao Lie Temple and Hui Lin, which are jointly called “Wuhou Temple”.

The average temperature of October in Chengdu is 20°C.

 

Currency

Chinese currency is called Renminbi, often abbreviated as RMB. Issued by the People's Bank of China, it is the sole legal tender for both the Chinese nationals and foreign tourists. The unit for Renminbi is Yuan, Jiao and fen. The conversion among the three is: 1 Yuan = 10 Jiao =100 Fen.

Credit cards can be accepted at most hotels, tourist shops and some department stores.

Most hotels offer foreign exchange services and exchange cash and travelers cheques. The Bank of China exchanges money and travelers’ cheques. In China, wherever you exchange money the same day, the exchange rate is the same. Banking Hours are 9am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays.
